Seaweed - Why Is It So Awesome For Dogs?!

Seaweed - Why is it so awesome for dogs?

I know what you’re thinking - seaweed for dogs - surely not?!

Or if you weren’t thinking that, you’ll be thinking - I thought seaweed was bad for dogs? Well you’re not entirely wrong and you’re not entirely right! Let’s take a closer look into why seaweed can be good and bad, what kind of benefits it contains, and why it’s going to be the next supplement you buy!

Wild seaweed you find on your local beach is the one you need to watch out for. When washed up onto the shore and dried out, seaweed shrinks in the sun. If your dog eats it, once it reaches their stomach it will expand in their digestive system and most likely cause a severe blockage, making them very ill. If you see your dog trying to get a taste but catch them before they swallow it, consider the fact that this plant has been floating around in the sea for who knows how long, and when washed up will be carrying all sorts of pollutants, sea life, and high volumes of salt. This level of salt can cause sodium poisoning which can be potentially harmful and result in veterinary care. So yes - Wild seaweed is bad for dogs and should be avoided on your next walk along the coast.

Now seaweed found in amazing dog shops such as ours, will either be granulated or powdered. This form of seaweed is harvested from pollution-free sea’s and processed so that all of the nastiness you read about above will not affect them. Supplement seaweed comes with a dosage recommendation so that your dog receives the correct quantity allowing them to aid from all of the benefits!

Our seaweed provides a natural solution for your dogs oral hygiene. Packed full of essential iodine and minerals, seaweed prevents bad breath, plaque and tartar build up, while also promoting healthier gums and cleaner teeth. Iodine also enhances your dogs coat quality and supports skin health by reducing itching, dryness and inflammation.

With over 50% natural fibre, seaweed supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which helps reduce gastrointestinal problems like diarrhoea or constipation. The seaweed we stock at Boston Barks is the best by far!
